Assam: In a tragic incident, a 15-year-old autistic girl who cannot not speak was raped by a 35-year-old man. He was arrested in Assam’s Cachar district on Saturday morning.
What happened
The tragic incident took place when the minor was alone at home and her parents were at work on a Friday afternoon. Her parents work as a daily wage labourer and lives in Ledia tea garden located in Lakhipur Legislative Assembly constituency. The accused also lives in the same area.
When her parents returned home on that Friday afternoon, they saw their daughter crying in pain, the father told the police.
“Her grandmother was trying to calm her but we could feel her situation. She cannot speak but we know her language. What she indicated, showed that she was sexually assaulted. Talking further we identified the culprit and lodged a complaint at the local police station.”
Her mother added, “It was a tough decision to go to the police because it can increase her mental trauma further but we just cannot let the culprit move free after committing such a crime. We want strict punishment for him”.
Assam Police Officials Statement
The police officials said that the accused ran away right after committing the heinous crime. He was then arrested from a house in Ledia tea garden in the morning of Saturday and produced in the court on the very same day based on the complaint by the minor’s father.
“The little girl cannot speak and the accused has admitted that he forced himself on her when she was alone at home. The victim was taken to the Silchar Medical College and Hospital for treatment. We have collected the reports from SMCH and her statement will be recorded once she recovers physically,” said Manir Uddin, the Officer in-charge of Joypur Police Outpost.
He further added that the accused, as per court’s order, have been sent to Silchar Central Jail and that police will continue to investigate and record statements.
Earlier Incidents
Earlier, a 45-year-old man sexually abused a 17-year-old minor autistic of Karimganj district in July. He was then arrested followed by the complaint lodged by her parents. He was booked under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act, 2012 besides other Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections. The accused was reportedly known to the victim’s family and used to visit often, the police official said.
In most of the cases it can be seen that accused is usually close or known to the victims or victims’ family. It is very unfortunate that till today the minds of few people is still narrow and filled with such heinous mindset.
