GMCH Principal, Dr. Achyut Ch. Baishya stated that as many as 9 patients suffering from Japanese Encephalitis admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital.

As per reports, out of the nine, five of them are in Intensive Care Unit and are undergoing treatment. The sudden spike in the number of Japanese Encephalitis cases have increased in the region. The other two patient who had been admitted, succumbed to the virus.

The report further reveal that three of the cases were detected from Nagaon, two from Barpeta, one each from Darrang, Kamrup M and Sonitpur.

The people who suffer from the virus, has no cure to it. He added, “Mosquito population has increased significantly which is one of the main carriers of the virus. This has happened due to water logging in several areas during the heavy rains and floods.”

It has been stated that women and children are most likely to be prone to the contracting the virus.”
