Tripura electric trains: In a landmark achievement for Tripura’s transportation infrastructure, the state is all set to roll out electric train services by February. This milestone comes as part of a Rs 46-crore electrification project launched in 2022 to modernize the state’s railway network and integrate it into India’s national railway grid. The transition from diesel-powered engines to electric trains promises to revolutionize connectivity and economic growth in the region while setting a benchmark for sustainable transportation in India’s northeast.
The North Eastern Railways (NFR) recently announced the successful completion of electrification work on the Badarpur-Agartala route via Dharmanagar. This vital upgrade lays the foundation for electric train operations across Tripura, ensuring faster and more reliable services. To power the railway network, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd (TSECL) has been tasked with energizing the railway electric transmission line. This effort is being supported by three newly constructed traction power substations to ensure a steady and sufficient power supply for the operations.
Infrastructure Updates: Powering the Future
TSECL has made remarkable progress in setting up the traction power substations required to energize the railway network. These substations, located in Kumarghat, Teliamura, and Udaipur, form the backbone of the electrification project. Nirupam Guha, Assistant General Manager (Transmission) at TSECL, shared an update on the project’s progress. He revealed that the Kumarghat substation was completed in March last year, while the other two substations are in the final stages of completion.
This infrastructure upgrade not only ensures seamless train operations but also strengthens the state’s overall energy capabilities. It underscores Tripura’s commitment to adopting modern technology and improving its connectivity with the rest of India.

Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, confirmed that the electrification of the Badarpur-Agartala route is complete, except for the Lumding-Badarpur section, which runs through challenging hilly terrain. “Steps have been taken to complete the electrification work from Lumding to Agartala as early as possible,” Sharma said. Once this section is complete, the entire route will be electrified, further enhancing the connectivity of Tripura with other parts of the country.
