It was a thrilling succession of events as a SpiceJet aircraft, SG 2448, flying from Delhi to Shillong, was today compelled to make an emergency landing at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport in the Borjhar area of Guwahati on Friday after an email-borne bomb threat proved to be a hoax.
SpiceJet flight lands in emergency mode in Guwahati
The bomb threat was reportedly made through e-mail, spurring a prompt response from both airline and airport authorities, ensuring that the 75 passengers aboard remained secure.
Apparently, it was while the SpiceJet aircraft was approaching its destination at Shillong that the bomb threat was reported to the authorities. This led to the decision of the flight crew to turn immediately to Guwahati, the nearest airport equipped with adequate security and emergency facilities for such incidents. Almost immediately on landing at LGBI Airport, the plane was whisked into a secure holding area on the tarmac, where airport security forces performed an extended search on the plane and its surroundings to ensure the threat.
Passenger Safety vis-à-vis Security Measures
Although very frightening, passengers flying on SG 2448 were not harmed due to the prompt reaction of the aircraft crew and ground authorities. Their situation was communicated to the passengers, and they were told to exercise proper safety measures as security checks were done. In a statement released, all the 75 passengers were safely evacuated as per the safety clearance of the aircraft.
One passenger narrated the incident, saying that as much as some of the passengers were confused, the airline staff and security officials dealt with the issue professionally. “The crew kept us informed and calm throughout the process. I was a bit nervous, but seeing the quick response from everyone reassured me,” said a passenger.
Impact of Hoax Threats on Aviation Operations
False bomb threats, like the one received for SG 2448, are very cost-intensive for airlines in terms of operations and passengers directly affected. Diversion poses issues with the other flight’s itinerary since more people need to undergo security checks to supplement additional security arrangements, emergency handling, and rescheduling of the passengers.
It is also significant in the sense that hoax threats invariably create ripples at airport security levels. As such a threat comes to the notice, authorities have to be highly sensitive to very minute and quite primitive signals communicated; yet they are expected to pursue stringent protocols, callously ignoring the rudimentary, if not childish, nature of the threat.
Every time a bomb threat is reported, a complex web of operations, communications, and emergency responses is set in motion, all soaking up time, energy, and resources. “Even one such hoax can impact normal airport operations, cause delays, and impact experiences of other passengers that may have absolutely nothing to do with the incident,” she adds.
Preventing Hoax Threats and Protecting Passengers’ Experience
The incident has called out for more sober and efficient monitoring of potential security threats, which include enhanced tracing ways for suspicious communications. Airlines and airports are putting efforts in place alongside cybersecurity experts to deal with the vulnerabilities associated with hoax threats delivered through digital channels like emails. According to many experts, what can avoid or solve such incidents sooner is increased sophisticated screening methods and surveillance.
SpiceJet has appreciated the passengers onboard SG 2448 for their cooperation during the emergency procedures. The airline maintains its commitment to working closely with the authorities to strengthen its security protocols and ensure passenger safety on board. Officials said they are actively working in finding those responsible for this hoax threat, and once that happens, they will take them through the law.
Continued Inquiry and Declarations
According to the latest update, ground authorities continued probing as to who sent out the threat email and what motivated them to make the threat. As an official declaration, it cited that “in-depth investigations are being carried out” in the case and that “it was a crime” because “sending such e-mails is a crime under the Indian Penal Code.”.
False threats not only imperil lives unnecessarily but also violate the rights of passengers to travel safely and without fear. Officials of airports and representatives of SpiceJet will update the travelling public along with the course of investigation.”.
It turned out to be a hoax, but certainly this is a reminder of the constant vigilance that has to be maintained in the self-protection of safe travel in the air. Authorities advice the people to handle such issues with caution and not disseminate misinformation which will only add to the confusion and anxiety of those concerned.
