In yet another fight against drugs, the Assam Police on January 30, recovered a huge amount of ganja, approximately 2,360 kg, in Karimganj district along the Assam-Tripura border.
Assam Polices seizes huge amount of Ganja:
Acting upon some information forwarded by reliable sources, the Karimganj district police conducted naka checking at Churaibari area along the Assam-Tripura border and intercepted a truck which was coming from the Tripura side.
According to a police official, during the search, the police team recovered the drug consignment from the truck. Two individuals have been apprehended in connection with the case.
Assam’s CM Himanta Biswa Sarma took this to its official Twitter handle where it wrote, “A huge consignment of approximately 2,360 kg of ganja has been recovered at Churaibari border of a neighbouring state by @karimganjpolice. Compliments to @assampolice for its continued efforts in eradicating the drug menace. Keep it up.”
In 2021, the police and administration of Karimganj district of Assam disposed of a huge quantity of seized drugs worth Rs 43 crore. Drugs worth Rs 43 crore were destroyed during a ‘Drugs disposal programme’ held at Police Reserve ground, Junitilla in Karimganj district.
According to the Karimganj district police, around 3.16 kg of heroin worth Rs 12.64 crore, 4.51 lakh pieces of Yaba tablets worth Rs 22.57 crore, 1.11 lakh bottles of cough syrup worth Rs 5.56 crore, more than 2100 kg of ganja worth Rs 2.17 crore were destroyed.
Drugs and Northeast:
While the levels of insurgency in the Northeast declined in the past five years, the movement of contraband and smuggled goods saw a rise.
In year 2020, the Assam Rifles confiscated contraband worth Rs 876 crore, a 61 per cent jump from 2019 when contraband worth Rs 544 crore was seized.
However the figure increased by July 2021 despite the Corona Virus pandemic.
