A Pakistan lawmaker made a controversial remark stating that smoking in women is a leading cause of the rising divorce rate.
About the Statement
According to Samaa TV, a lawmaker from the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has claimed a bizarre belief, that the increasing divorce rate in Pakistan could also be blamed on smoking, given that the smokers are women.
Nausheen Hamid, Member National Assembly (MNA), said in a seminar, held in Pakistan’s Islamabad, that smoking in women is a leading cause of increasing divorce rates in their country.
A report has informed that Nausheen Hamid has said the following on the use of tobacco by women, “Women smokers who get married end up divorced because they are not accepted by their in-laws”.
She further claimed that in the last few years, the number of women smokers has seen a dramatic rise.
She said, “A number of social problems emerge, for both the smokers and their families. I personally know such women”.
On another note, according to the Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Health, two out of five people who smoke are women.
