Torrential rains sweeping through Mizoram have prompted the closure of schools in the Aizawl and Kolasib districts as landslides and flooding create hazardous conditions. The decision to close schools was made on Tuesday by district administrations in response to relentless downpours that began early Monday, with officials prioritizing the safety of students and residents.

Unyielding Rains Cause Widespread Disruption

The heavy rains have particularly impacted the state capital, Aizawl, and nearby districts like Kolasib. With the persistent deluge sparking concerns, officials have issued public notices urging residents to remain vigilant. The closure of schools aims to keep children safe from potential disaster zones, as landslides and floods pose significant risks.

Despite the severity of the situation, the State Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department has reported no casualties so far. However, the memory of recent tragedies still lingers in the minds of locals. Earlier this year, between March and May, Mizoram suffered a series of natural calamities that claimed the lives of at least 42 people, with a devastating landslide in Aizawl on May 28 accounting for 34 of those deaths.

Widespread Damage and Displacement

In addition to the tragic loss of lives, the ongoing heavy rains have caused extensive damage to property across the state. Nearly 6,000 houses were destroyed during the earlier calamities, as relentless downpours, hailstorms, and landslides wreaked havoc. Thousands of families remain displaced, struggling to rebuild their lives amid the ongoing monsoon season.

Given the scale of devastation, the Mizoram state government has appealed to the Central Government for financial assistance to support rehabilitation efforts. Officials have requested over Rs. 200 crore to aid in the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure and the rehabilitation of those affected by these natural disasters.

Mizoram on High Alert as Rains Continue

As the rains persist, Mizoram remains on high alert. Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors and avoid areas prone to landslides. Rescue teams are on standby, ready to respond to any emergencies that may arise. The closure of schools is a precautionary measure, reflecting the state’s proactive approach to safeguarding its citizens during this challenging monsoon season.
