In a landmark development, the governments of Mizoram and Assam have signed a new Joint Statement aimed at resolving their long-standing inter-state boundary dispute. The agreement was finalized at the State Guest House in Aizawl, with Mizoram’s Home Minister K. Sapdanga and Assam’s Minister for Border Protection & Development Atul Bora representing their respective states.
This Joint Statement is a significant step forward, building on the foundations laid earlier this year through the ‘Goodwill Mission,’ which was first endorsed by the Chief Ministers of both states in February 2024. The mission was initiated to foster peaceful relations along the contentious border, and today’s agreement further strengthens the commitment to maintaining harmony and preventing future conflicts.
Key Points of the Agreement
The core of the agreement is a mutual pledge by both Mizoram and Assam to promote and sustain peaceful interactions along their shared border. To this end, the governments have agreed to organize joint cultural and sports festivals, designed to enhance community engagement and understanding between the people of the two states. These events are scheduled to begin before January 31, 2025, and are seen as crucial in building trust and solidarity.
Moreover, the agreement reaffirms the dedication of both states to resolving border issues through dialogue rather than conflict. Regular meetings between officials from both governments will be held to address ongoing concerns, with the next Ministerial-level meeting set to take place in Guwahati, Assam, before March 31, 2025. This commitment to continuous dialogue underscores the importance of open communication in maintaining peace.
Zero-Tolerance Policy Against Smuggling
In addition to resolving border disputes, Mizoram and Assam have also reiterated their zero-tolerance policy against the smuggling of arecanut, a practice that has long plagued the region. Both states have vowed to ensure strict enforcement of regulations to curb illegal activities along their border.
Ongoing Collaboration
To ensure continuous dialogue and collaboration, it has been agreed that Deputy Commissioners and Superintendents of Police from both states will hold monthly virtual meetings, supplemented by biannual in-person meetings. This systematic approach to communication is intended to reinforce the peaceful coexistence of these neighboring states and maintain the momentum of the agreement.
This new Joint Statement between Mizoram and Assam marks a significant milestone in the efforts to resolve their long-standing border dispute, setting a positive precedent for future relations between the two states.
