With the steady decline in the number of COVID-19 cases in Meghalaya, on Monday, the State Education Department suggested to the committee headed by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma that educational institutions across the state be reopened from September 1. According to the Additional Secretary of Education Department, D P Wahlang, Educational institutions in Meghalaya will be resumed from September 1.
“We have decided to recommend reopening of schools and colleges during our meeting today,” Meghalaya education minister Lahkmen Rymbui said.
Lower classes
For lower classes, the department has recommended there can only be school visits for students from sixth to eighth standard in urban areas. Meanwhile, education minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that online teaching will continue for Classes 1-5 in urban areas while there can only be school visits for the same classes in rural areas.
Decision to be made by High-Powered Committee
The Meghalaya education minister added that modalities on reopening of schools and colleges in the state would be finalised after the HPC’s approval. Also, additional Chief Secretary, Education, DP Wahlang said according to the preliminary data of college teachers, at least 72% of them have been vaccinated with at least one shot. As far as the vaccination of school teachers is concerned, the department is collecting the data, he said.
All Educational institutions in the State have remained shut since March 21 last year due to COVID. However, online classes are going on. Further, earlier this year, Meghalaya Board of School Education has held the class 10 and 12 examinations under closely administered COVID-19 SOPs.
