International Human Solidarity Day: Our nation is a living midas of the phrase ‘unity in diversity’ that condemns any sort of discrimination on the name of culture, language, ideology, religion, class, creed, ethnicity, etc.

The International Human Solidarity Day is observed across the globe on December 20, every year to celebrate unity in diversity and raise awareness and concern about the importance of solidarity.

The topic represents a broad spectrum of views, profundity of tolerance and dynamism.

Here people may have different, even opposing viewpoints on life, faith, social structure, economic growth, political system, forms of spiritual development and salvation, though at the same time belonging to the same ground.

Aim

International Human Solidarity Day

The prime aim of the ‘International Human Solidarity Day‘ is to recognize the universal value of solidarity by making member states aware of global objectives and initiatives to reduce poverty and to formulate and share poverty reduction strategies of independent nations around the world.

It is a day to remind governments to respect their commitments to international agreements, a day to encourage debate on the ways to promote solidarity for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals including poverty eradication.

Besides, the IHSD is promoted by the World Solidarity Fund and United Nations Development Programme, which are focused on achieving goals set for worldwide poverty eradication.

History

In the Millennium declaration this day is called to be one of the fundamental values of international relations in the 21st Century, wherein those who either suffer or benefit least deserve help from those who benefit most. Consequently, in the context of globalization and the challenge of growing inequality, strengthening international solidarity is indispensable.

The day was introduced by the General Assembly during the 2005 World Summit and formally established on December 22, 2005, by resolution which recognized solidarity as a fundamental and universal value.

Significance

Citing globalisation and the challenge of growing inequality, the United Nations holds that the strengthening of international solidarity is significant.

Therefore, it is important to promote the culture of solidarity and the spirit of sharing for combating poverty. The day is observed every year to promote the concept of solidarity in the fight against poverty and also in the involvement of all relevant stakeholders.

The day also focuses on promoting peace, human rights, and social and economic development. The United Nations Organisation realised that solidarity is cooperation in solving international problems of an economic, social, cultural, or humanitarian character.

How to participate?

Any individual is free to participate or celebrate the day by contributing to education or helping the poor or physically or mentally disabled.

About Solidarity

Solidarity is defined to be an awareness of shared interests, objectives, standards, and sympathies creating a psychological sense of unity of groups or classes, which rejects the class conflict. It is called the string that binds the individuals in a society to be one.

Solidarity came into view on August 31, 1980 at the Gdansk Shipyard when the Communist government of Poland signed the agreement allowing for its existence. On September 17, 1980, over twenty Inter-factory Founding Committees of independent trade unions merged at the congress into one national organisation, NSZZ Solidarity.

There are different motives for solidarity. For some, affection and shared norms and beliefs are motives, while for others, rational choice and self-interest are drivers. And once we recognize and start to value the concept of solidarity, there stands no one to make us fall apart.

The belief in Unity in Diversity till some extent reduces the chances of chaos and disturbances amidst the population. The concept of Unity in diversity is a characteristic aspect of a beautiful country that brings people together in the bond of humanity and peace.
