Vietnamese National Targeted in Elaborate Social Media Scam
In a major breakthrough, the Guwahati Police have successfully solved a case involving the kidnapping and robbery of a Vietnamese citizen in the city. The incident took place on a Saturday when the victim, who had arrived in Guwahati, was abducted and looted by three individuals. The perpetrators managed to steal ₹5,00,000, along with a smartwatch and a laptop, from the foreign visitor. The crime occurred near Amingaon, an area under the jurisdiction of the Azara Police Station in the West Guwahati Police district.
Police Investigation Leads to Arrest of Three Suspects
The police, acting swiftly on the case, arrested three suspects identified as Riaz Ali, Arif Ahmed, and Iftikar Ahmed, all residents of Koya in Kamrup district. The investigation also led to the seizure of the vehicle used in the crime, a car with the registration number AS 01 AB 5455. The culprits had allegedly contacted the Vietnamese citizen via social media, convincing him to travel to Assam by promising to support his journey. Upon his arrival at Guwahati International Airport, the suspects picked him up and proceeded to rob him of his belongings, including forcing him to transfer money from his bank account to theirs.
Past Incidents Highlight Growing Concern Over Abductions in Guwahati
This alarming incident is not isolated. Similar crimes have been reported in the past, with the most recent case involving a youth abducted from the Jalukbari area of the city. The victim, who was waiting for transportation on the Jalukbari Flyover at night, was forcibly taken by three men in a Maruti Swift Dzire. The attackers threatened the victim with a knife, looted his cash, mobile phone, and ATM card, and coerced him into transferring funds via UPI apps.

The recent kidnapping and robbery cases have prompted the Guwahati Police to take stringent action against the rising criminal activities in the city.
