On February 18, some black hats shot at and injured the father of the National People’s Party candidate for Andro constituency in Imphal East district of Manipur.
Father of NPP candidate shot dead in Manipur:
The NPP candidate Lourembam Sanjoy also came under attack when he was rushing to his father’s aid from a party meeting. However, he fortunately escaped unhurt.
Sanjoy accused BJP workers of attacking him, his family and his supporters. Hours after the attack, suspected NPP workers allegedly ransacked houses belonging to supporters of the BJP candidate Th. Shyamkumar Singh.
Where and when did the incident took place:
According to sources, the incident took place at the gates of the residence of the party’s Andro candidate L. Sanjoy Singh when he, his father L. Samjai Singh and some supporters were having an election-related discussion on the night of February 18.
Meghalaya Chief Minister and NPP president Conrad K Sangma met the injured person at a hospital during the day and strongly condemned the incident.
CM Sangma speaks on the incident:
While speaking to Media CM Sangma said, “This is a very unfortunate incident, and it reflects the frustration of certain individuals. We will meet the Chief Electoral Officer and express our concern over the prevailing situation this election. I have been campaigning in the state since 2002, and I have never seen such extreme poll violence. This has to stop.”
