According to the India Meteorological Department, Delhi had approximately 70 millimetres of rain in January this year, the most in the month in 32 years (IMD).
By 9.30 p.m. on Saturday, Delhi had received 69.8 mm of rain, according to a senior IMD official.
Highest rainfall after years
He said it’s the most since January 1989, when the capital received 79.7 millimeters of rain.
Rain on Saturday lowered the highest temperature to 14.7 degrees Celsius, seven degrees below average and the lowest for the season so far, according to the IMD.
The city’s official weather station, the Safdarjung Observatory, recorded 5 mm of rain until 8 a.m. on Saturday.
Temperatures drop
The minimum temperature was 11.5 degrees Celsius, four degrees more than the season’s normal, according to the IMD.
A Western Disturbance is expected to bring widespread rain to Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, west Uttar Pradesh, and north Rajasthan from January 21 to 23, according to the IMD.
For Sunday, the weather service predicts an overcast sky with light rain or drizzle. The highest and lowest temperatures are expected to be approximately 16 and 10 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Air quality in and around the state
On Saturday, Delhi’s air quality was classified as “extremely poor.” According to data from the Central Pollution Control Board, the 24-hour Air Quality Index (AQI) was 316 at 4 p.m.
Faridabad’s AQI (330) and Gurgaon’s (304) were likewise in the “extremely low” category.
