Police detain a 28-year-old CRPF constable and a woman

Near Assam’s Kolia Bhomora Bridge which is not far from the Tezpur Air Force, a 28-year-old CRPF constable and a woman whom he claims to be his wife have been detained after the man was caught impersonating an Army Officer.

According to defence and security sources, the man has been identified as Yatendra Singh who claims to be from the 9 Para (Special Forces) unit. The woman (yet to be identified) accompanied Singh on Saturday in the evening.

How did the suspicions on his appearance come about?

Sources told ThePrint that Yatendra Singh had told them that he was from the 9 Para Special Force and then later said that he was with the CRPF.

Singh was wearing an Army uniform with an ‘Indian Army’ badge which is not the norm, this raised suspicions amongst the Military Intelligence.

The source adds, “We also found a CRPF identity card and got in touch with the paramilitary force. They confirmed that the man is a constable with the CRPF camp of 132 battalions and was on duty as a guard at the United Nations mission office in Srinagar.”

Tracking down the impersonator’s footprints

According to sources, on 19 August, Singh had taken an Air Asia Flight from Delhi and had checked into a hotel located in the Paltan Bazar area of Guwahati. The next day, the woman joined him at the airport wearing a t-shirt with a Para Special Force insignia.

“We have recovered CCTV footage from the hotel that showed the man checking into the premises in the Army uniform,” the source said.

Meanwhile, the Alumni Police station in Assam’s Nagaon district tells ThePrint that so far no complaint has been lodged by the Army. “He has been detained. The Army authorities are still probing the case.”

Records confirm the woman’s relationship with Singh

Yatendra Singh and the woman were first spotted getting off an autorickshaw near the Kolia Bhomora Bridge on Saturday evening by a Military Intelligence surveillance team. This place is located very close to Misa camp and the Tezpur military station.

Moreover, the sources say that Yatendra Singh was not able to answer the questions that were asked properly. Despite him telling the investigators that the woman was his wife, Singh’s records with the CRPF negate his statement as the records state that he is married to another woman.

Lastly, the sources say that they are also investigating the woman at the moment.
