In response to the escalating unrest in Bangladesh, the Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya Frontier has significantly ramped up security measures along the 444-kilometer international border. This heightened vigilance is aimed at ensuring robust border management and preventing illegal activities, including smuggling and unauthorized crossings.
Enhanced Security Measures and Vigilance
Inspector General (IG) of Border Security Force Meghalaya, Harbax Singh Dhillon, has emphasized that troops and field commanders are fully briefed and vigilant regarding the developments in Bangladesh. Senior officers and commandants have been strategically deployed at key border points to maintain a mission-ready posture and address any unforeseen circumstances.
In addition to the increased patrols, all land customs stations and integrated check posts along the Meghalaya-Bangladesh border are on high alert. The state government has imposed a night curfew along the international border to further bolster security. Local police and civil administration are working in tandem with the Border Security Force to enhance vigilance, and villagers have been advised to stay extra alert.
High Alert and Coordination Efforts
The BSF has issued a high alert for the India-Bangladesh border for the next two days, starting Monday. BSF Director General Daljit Singh Chawdhary has arrived in Kolkata to closely monitor the situation and oversee developments. This proactive approach underscores the BSF’s commitment to effective border management amid the ongoing crisis.
Despite the heightened security, Bangladesh Army Chief Waker-Uz-Zaman has assured that there is no immediate need for a curfew or emergency measures within the country. He expressed confidence that a resolution to the crisis would be achieved soon, with an interim government managing the situation.
Ongoing Efforts and Coordination
A senior BSF officer confirmed that, in light of the developments in Bangladesh, a high alert has been issued to BSF frontiers along the India-Bangladesh border. Personnel at North and South Bengal Frontiers have been instructed to intensify patrolling as part of the “Ops Alert” exercise, ensuring comprehensive border control.
Since July 18, the BSF has facilitated the safe entry of Indian students from Bangladesh, ensuring their secure passage amidst the unrest. The combined efforts of the BSF, local police, and civil administration reflect a coordinated approach to maintaining security and addressing the challenges posed by the current situation in Bangladesh.
