Mahfuz Alam, an adviser in Bangladesh’s interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has stirred controversy by issuing a provocative statement threatening to annex parts of India. The comments were made on December 16, Victory Day—a national holiday in Bangladesh commemorating its triumph over the Pakistani army in the 1971 Liberation War.
Bangladesh Adviser’s Provocative Comments Spark Controversy
On Victory Day, Mahfuz Alam, who is known for his hardline Islamist views, attempted to incite discord in Northeast and Northern India through a controversial Facebook post. In the post, he highlighted cultural similarities between the country and parts of India, which he claimed transcend religious differences. He also shared a map portraying the Indian states of West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam as territories of Bangladesh. However, following widespread backlash, the post was deleted.
Attempt to Create Division
Alam’s post claimed that the cultures of Northeast India and Bangladesh have a shared heritage and history, which, according to him, have been suppressed by “Hindu extremists” and the “anti-Bengal attitude” of upper-caste Hindus. He further alleged that India has pursued a program of “control and colonization” over these regions. “To ensure true freedom from India, we need to repeat 1975 and 2024,” Alam declared, referring to two historically significant events in Bangladesh’s political history.
The reference to 1975 alludes to the assassination of Bangladesh’s founding leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and 18 members of his family in a military coup. Alam also drew parallels to the removal of Mujibur Rahman’s daughter, Sheikh Hasina, from the prime ministerial office in 2024 through what he described as “undemocratic means.”
Calls for “New Geography and System”
In his provocative message, Alam argued that the political and geographical boundaries established after 1947 have left the region “trapped in systems” that fail to reflect its cultural and historical realities. “We need a new geography and system,” he wrote, suggesting that the political separation of Bangladesh from certain Indian regions is artificial and unjust. The statement appeared to encourage separatist sentiments in Northeast India, a region already known for its complex sociopolitical dynamics.
Backlash and Deleted Post
The post sparked outrage on social media and condemnation from political leaders and analysts in both India and Bangladesh. Many criticized Alam’s attempt to exploit cultural and historical ties for divisive purposes. Indian officials dismissed the statement as inflammatory rhetoric aimed at destabilizing the region.
“These comments are baseless and provocative,” said a senior official from India’s Ministry of External Affairs. “India and Bangladesh share a strong bilateral relationship based on mutual respect and cooperation. Such statements do not reflect the views of the people of Bangladesh.”
Bangladeshi political commentators have also expressed concern over the potential ramifications of Alam’s statement. “Victory Day is a moment to celebrate our liberation, not to sow discord with our neighbors,” said Professor Shafiq Rahman, a political analyst in Dhaka. “Statements like these only tarnish the spirit of the day and the legacy of our founding leaders.”
Broader Implications
The incident has raised questions about the political dynamics within Bangladesh’s interim government. Muhammad Yunus, who leads the interim administration, has yet to comment on the controversy. Analysts suggest that Alam’s statements could undermine Bangladesh’s international standing and strain its diplomatic relations with India.
India and Bangladesh have historically enjoyed close ties, particularly in areas such as trade, cultural exchange, and counter-terrorism cooperation. However, issues such as cross-border migration and water-sharing disputes have occasionally strained relations. Alam’s inflammatory remarks could add a new layer of tension to this complex relationship.
Historical Context
Alam’s invocation of historical events underscores the enduring impact of the 1971 Liberation War on South Asia’s geopolitics. The war not only led to the creation of Bangladesh but also reshaped regional power dynamics. While the relationship between India and Bangladesh has evolved significantly since then, Alam’s comments highlight the lingering sensitivities surrounding the region’s shared history.
Mahfuz Alam’s statements on Victory Day have drawn sharp criticism for their divisive tone and unfounded claims. While his controversial post has been deleted, the incident serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by inflammatory rhetoric in maintaining peace and stability in the region. As both India and Bangladesh continue to navigate their complex bilateral relationship, such provocations underscore the need for responsible leadership and dialogue.
