TRIPURA: Prohibitory Order issued after BJP-Trinamool Clash in Tripura; 19 injured
At least 19 people were injured when supporters of the BJP and the Trinamool Congress (TMC) clashed in Teliamura, Tripura’s Khowai district. Prohibitory orders were imposed in the area under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
Two police officers were also hurt in the incident days before the state’s civic body elections, forcing the government to issue prohibitory orders in Teliamura Municipal Council wards 13, 14, and 15, they added.
Teliamura Sub Divisional Magistrate Md Sajjad P issued an order today imposing section 144 on the Teliamura Municipal Council’s 13, 14, and 15 ward areas starting 19 November to ensure peace, law, and order.
The order will be in effect until November 24, according to a statement released late Thursday.
Trouble began around 9.30 p.m. on Wednesday in the Kalitila area, when Trinamool workers staged a protest near a BJP office, according to Assistant Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Subrata Chakraborty.
He claimed that supporters from both parties came face to face, resulting in an incident.
“At the same time, TMC workers attacked BJP supporters, who retaliated,” he continued.
Mr Chakraborty said police sought to appease both sides but had to resort to “moderate force” using tear gas shells to maintain order.
The clash injured a total of 19 people, including two police officers, he added.
At the Teliamura police station, three cases were filed in connection with the event.
The father of Trinamool worker Anirban Sarkar, who was admitted to a hospital with injuries, filed two cases, according to police.
According to the police, a separate case was filed with allegations of attempted murder, voluntarily causing grave injury and unlawful assembly.
Sources by authorities state, five people were arrested, including Sarkar.
Four of them were arrested and sent to court, where they were held in judicial detention until November 30. Sarkar was unable to appear in court because he was hospitalised.
Sushmita Dev, a senior TMC leader, claimed that despite Supreme Court orders to ensure free and fair elections on November 25, her party’s candidates and activists are being targeted.
Nabendu Bhattacharya, a BJP spokeswoman, denied the charges, saying that members of his party have never harmed a TMC worker because they are not a political opponent in the state.
“They lack an organisational base in India and do not pose a political threat to the BJP. We don’t believe in a culture of violence either,” he stated.
On November 25, civic body elections will be conducted. The ruling BJP has won seven of the state’s 20 civic boards without opposition.
