The brutal murder of senior journalist Swapan Kumar Bhadra on October 12 has raised alarm over the safety of media professionals in Bangladesh. The 65-year-old was hacked to death by three assailants outside his residence in Mymensingh, further intensifying concerns about the rising violence against journalists in the country.

Death of Swapan Kumar Bhadra

Bhadra, although not actively writing for newspapers at the time, remained vocal on social media, addressing critical issues such as terrorism, drug abuse, and anti-social activities. Local authorities have arrested one suspect in connection with the attack, while two others remain at large.

The Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), an international media safety organization, has condemned the killing and called for swift justice and compensation for Bhadra’s family. PEC President Blaise Lempen urged Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Prof Muhammad Yunus, to ensure that those responsible for the murder are held accountable.

Bhadra’s murder is the sixth journalist killing in Bangladesh this year, occurring amid ongoing political unrest and anti-government protests. The country has witnessed a disturbing trend of violence against the media, with journalists increasingly targeted during demonstrations. The PEC reports that 110 journalists have been killed worldwide in 2024, underscoring the global dangers faced by media workers.

In neighboring Pakistan, the situation is equally dire, with ten journalists killed since the start of the year, according to PEC’s South Asia representative Nava Thakuria.

The PEC has called for increased protection for journalists across South Asia, stressing the need for governments to prioritize media safety and uphold freedom of the press.
