The state government has decided to allot land to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Guwahati for the establishment of a medical school on the institute’s premises.
Statement by CM Sarma
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a speech on the day of the IIT’s founding that he began to learn about the IIT and that Guwahati wanted to open a medical school on his campus. He had discussed the matter with the corresponding deputy commissioner and had asked him for this purpose. This famous institution provides additional lands. The prime minister said it would be great if the project went well.
State to improve medical facilities
He said that the Covid19 pandemic has damaged the country and the country in every respect, and it is time to shift the focus towards improving medical facilities. This (the health sector) is another area where the government can work closely together to create a better tomorrow.
IIT, Guwahati has a functioning hospital on its campus. The hospital was established in 2006, covers an area of 20,000 feet, and has more than nine specialties.
Flood problem has not been solved yet
The Chief Minister also spoke about the floods in Assam, which have been a major problem in the state for the past few years. Despite a large amount of money spent on the construction and repair of dams, the problem has not been solved. CM stated that IIT, Guwahati needs to show how to find viable solutions to endless crises.
IIT Guwahati was established in 1994 and is the 6th IIT in India. In the NIRF India 2020 Ranking, it ranks 7th in both engineering and general categories.
