Following the deaths of numerous cows and buffaloes in the Ukhrul district of Manipur, an NGO, Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) has banned the sale of beef in any form in the district. No slaughter is permitted in the district, a notification has been issued by TNL.
Mysterious disease kills many cows
The notification stated that a mysterious sickness has claimed dozens of cows and buffaloes at the northern side of the district which borders Myanmar.
District authorities yet to take action
The district authorities are yet to take any steps to study and identify the disease, the tribals of the interior areas, activists alleged. It is feared that many locals would have possibly come in contact with this new disease.
There is a free sale of beef in different parts of the State. Police stated that the beef dealers do not hold any legal license for opening meat shops.
Beef ban in other parts of India
Recently, there has been a ban on Beef in certain parts of India. However, the reason behind the ban is different.
Like in Assam, as per the recent legislation that has been passed, it is illegal to buy or sell beef in regions that are predominantly inhabited by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and different non-beef-eating groups and within a radius of five km of any temple or religious establishments of the Hindu religion.
