*In 2020 Michael Asom was appointed as deputy commander-in-chief*
The outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent, or ULFA (I), has appointed Michael Asom as its new deputy commander-in-chief.
Asom has replaced Drishti Rajkhowa, who surrendered formally before the Army and Assam police on November 12, a statement issued by the outfit said on November 13.
A brief about ULFA-I
The United Liberation Front of Assam isone of the militant organisations in the northeast region, which was was formed on April 7, 1979, by Bhimakanta Buragohain, Rajiv Rajkonwar alias Arabinda Rajkhowa, Golap Baruah alias Anup Chetia, Samiran Gogoi alias Pradip Gogoi, Bhadreshwar Gohain and Paresh Baruah at the Rang Ghar in Sibsagar to establish a “sovereign socialist Assam” through an armed struggle.
The ULFA had clearly partitioned its political and military wing. Paresh Barua headed the ‘military wing’ as the outfit’s ‘commander-in-chief’. Arabinda Rajkhowa was the head of the ‘political wing’.
Paresh Baruah was the ‘commander in chief’ & the Deputy-Commander-in-Chief’ Raju Baruah, who was in the custody of Assam Police since December 2009, was released on bail on November 26, 2010.
However, The Government of India banned the organisation in 1990 citing it as a terrorist organisation, but the United States Department of State lists it under “other groups of concern.”
ULFA-I demands for jobs for Indigenous people
Recently the banned outfit of Assam ULFA (I) have issued a statement that it would carry out armed operations against the three Oil companies ONGC, OIL and IOCL if they don’t fulfil their demands.
Recently the ULFA (I) has demanded permanent jobs for indigenous candidates of Assam and said Instead of contractual jobs, the ONGC, OIL and IOCL must provide permanent jobs to the indigenous candidates.
