Manipur Assembly Elections 2022: Congress releases 2nd list of candidates

On February 1, the Congress released its second list of 10 candidates for the upcoming Manipur assembly election.

Congress releases 2nd list of candidates:

Among the list of nominees of the second list former minister Ningthoujam Biren Singh and legislator Pukhrem Sharatchandra are also present. 

Earlier, on January 22, the party released the first list of 40 candidates with former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh contesting from Thoubal assembly seat.

About the selection:

The candidates have been selected by the Congress’ central election committee. 

The Manipur Congress would contest with 40 candidates, the National People’s Party with 20 candidates and the Naga People’s Front from 10 seats.

The party has also forged an alliance with five other “like-minded” parties in the state. 

Manipur Legislative Assembly:

The tenure of Manipur Legislative Assembly is scheduled to end on 19 March 2022. The previous assembly elections were held in March 2017. After the election, coalition of Bharatiya Janata Party, National People’s Party, Naga People’s Front and Lok Janshakti Party formed the state government, with N. Biren Singh becoming Chief Minister.

Election to the 60-member Manipur assembly will be held in two phases on February 27 and March 3. The result will be declared on March 10.
