In a big operation against the trade of narcotics, drugs worth approx Rs 4.5 crores were seized in Karimganj district of Assam on Sunday. The people of Karimganj district police intercepted a vehicle carrying heroin following a specific intelligence about movement. According to local authorities, four persons have been caught in connection with drug peddling.
Huge Drug Bust in Karimganj
The operation was led by Superintendent of Police, Karimganj district. Officials said this was a follow-up action after getting a tipoff from a reliable source about a suspicious vehicle coming into Assam from Mizoram. The police team acted swiftly and put up a check at Chewali Beel, which is on a famous trafficking route. The vehicle belonged to Mizoram, and after searching it in detail, huge quantity of heroin was found.
The police discovered 548.82 grams of heroin, carefully packaged in 48 soap boxes hidden in a secret container in the vehicle. The concealing method as well as the amount indicate that the smugglers were part of a bigger, organized structure.
Value and Legal Consequences
The narcotics control bureau estimated that the seized drugs amount to almost Rs 4.5 crore. It is one of the biggest seizure incidents in this region as the battle against drug smuggling is being waged. Just moments after the seizure, four occupants of the vehicle, including the driver, were taken into custody. The arrestees are being placed in the register under NDPS Act of 1985, which gives drastic punishment in cases related to trafficking of banned drugs.
The police officials continue to interrogate all the arrested persons to ascertain their involvement in major trafficking operations and find out if they have acquaintance with any crime syndicate or organized gangs.
Assam Chief Minister Reaction
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the policing force for “swift and effective action”. Taking to social media, the chief minister hailed the anti-narcotics team for executing the operation successfully. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he said:
“Karimganj police conducted an anti-narcotics drive operation at Chewali Beel, where a vehicle from a neighboring state was intercepted. 548.82 grams of heroin was recovered, and four persons were arrested. Good work!, he said while referring to the operations conducted by the Assam Police against drug traffickers.
Again referring to his earlier assurance that the Assam government would not shy away from further strengthening its drug operations in the state, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday unveiled a trafficking route like this during an anti-narcotics drive operation conducted in Chewali Beel.
The Trafficking Route
Preliminary inquires point to the fact that the heroin recovered here had come into India from Myanmar, which is generally known to be the hub of the narcotics drug trade in South East Asia, say the police. The drugs would have entered Mizoram before heading south into southern Assam, said the police. They believe the ultimate destination of the heroin could have been either Bangladesh or other areas of India.
Mizoram and Southern Assam and also Tripura are located geographically and, therefore, states that play a very important role in transit corridor of drug trafficking. Both the states share long porous borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh respectively, hence creating easy routes for traffickers, who want to smuggle drugs across international border. The police suspect that a major chunk of drugs smuggled through from Myanmar is heroin and Methamphetamine, which enjoys a very high demand in Indian and international markets.
Myanmar has recently known infamy in the heroin and methamphetamine tablet production of narco syndicates. Being in close proximity to northeastern India, the region frequently takes undue advantage, facilitating drug inputs into other Indian states or exportation to abroad by fowing to Bangladesh.
Increasing Concern over this Matter in Northeastern India
This latest seizure yet again draws attention to the deep concern that has been growing over drug smuggling in India’s northeastern states. Southern Assam, Mizoram, and Tripura have come to emerge as easy passage routes for illicit trafficking of narcotics primarily emanating from Myanmar. The region is strategically located, but its long border with other international countries and difficult terrain makes it easy for the drug syndicates.
As the appetite for smuggled narcotics continues to grow in the region, State and Central law enforcement agencies have stepped up activity within the borderland itself to counter the activities of the drug traffickers. Yet, so far, despite a series of high-profile seizures and some pretty high-profile arrests, the smuggling networks seem resilient; their smarts mean that they can change tactics as easily as they change clothes.

Investigation in Progress
Police officials will be interrogating further into the seized drugs and the arrested persons so that more information may be corroborated about the trafficking network and whether it has connections with the bigger narcotic networks operating in or outside the country. The police also are said to be secretly working hand in glove with their counterparts in Mizoram and other northeastern states to help check the flow of drugs coming in through this region.
The crackdown on drug trafficking is part of a broader initiative by the Assam government to check the menacing trade of narcotics in the region. Assam law-enforcing agencies are geared up for increased surveillance and intelligence-gathering activities to break up the smuggling networks operating in the area.
The effective seizure of heroin worth Rs 4.5 crore in Karimganj marks another major victory in Assam’s stringent fight against drug smuggling. Rising heroin worth Rs 4.5 crore seized in Karimganj raises the importance of coordinated intelligence efforts and vigilance by law enforcement agencies. The investigation will continue, and those involved in the illicit drug trade will be booked.
