In a poignant tribute to the late maestro, Bhupen Uzir, the 5th Edition of the Gupshup Music Awards, 2023, is set to confer upon him the prestigious “Lifetime Achievement Award.” The ceremony, scheduled for January 20, 2024, at the Assam Engineering Institute Playground in Chandmari, Guwahati, will commemorate the unparalleled contributions of this distinguished music director and composer to the Assamese music and film industry.

Late Bhupen Uzir to Receive “The Gupshup Lifetime Achievement Award

Bhupen Uzir, born on January 1, 1940, in Hajo, Assam, India, embarked on his musical journey at the tender age of 12, displaying an innate talent for the guitar and tabla. His passion for music evolved into a prolific career, marking him as a key figure in the Assamese music landscape.

During the 1970s, Bhupen Uzir ventured into music direction, leaving an indelible mark with enchanting compositions for Assamese cinematic gems such as “Agnigarh,” “Jakhini,” and “Aei Morom Tumar Babe.” His innovative approach blended traditional Assamese music seamlessly with contemporary elements, showcasing his versatility.

Beyond the silver screen, Uzir’s creative genius extended to television serials and documentaries, amassing a repertoire of over 500 songs in Assamese and regional languages. His pioneering efforts in bridging traditional and modern musical elements introduced a fresh perspective, influencing the course of Assamese music.

Tragically, Bhupen Uzir’s illustrious career came to an end on January 9, 2024, at the age of 84. However, his musical legacy persists, resonating not only in Assam but throughout India, where his compositions continue to be cherished by music enthusiasts.

The Gupshup Music Awards, now in their 5th Edition, have evolved into a hallmark celebration within the region. The awards play a crucial role in recognizing and honoring outstanding contributions to the vibrant Assamese music industry. By conferring the “Lifetime Achievement Award” upon Bhupen Uzir, the Gupshup Music Awards not only pay homage to a musical pioneer but also underline their commitment to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Assam.

The ceremony will be graced by Jatin Goswami, a distinguished Indian dancer and choreographer, serving as the Chief Guest for the evening. Goswami, renowned for his expertise in the classical Sattriya dance, adds a touch of distinction and significance to the awards ceremony. As the founder director of Sattriya Akademi and the recipient of the 2004 Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, he was further honored with the Padma Shri in 2008 for his substantial contributions to Sattriya dance.

In presenting the “Gupshup Lifetime Achievement Award, 2023,” Jatin Goswami not only pays homage to Bhupen Uzir’s extraordinary career but also elevates the ceremony with his esteemed presence. The Gupshup Music Awards, through this poignant recognition, immortalize the legacy of a musical pioneer who forever shaped the landscape of Assamese music.
