Along with the three individuals the police recovered an amount of Rs. 3410 cash, 2 mobile phones, a total numbers of 6 entry ticket books and 50 blank ticket books.
Previously arrested:
In the last few months, many such gambling counters have come up in villages under Sorbhog and Kalgachia police stations in lower Assam’s Barpeta district. Complaints have been pouring in from different quarters that “Teer” (arrow) tickets are being sold at paan shops, roadside eateries, hotels and many other shops in different areas of Jania constituency in Barpeta.
Over 40 people have been arrested in October, 2021 and police say they are trying their best to check such illegal activities. Sources says that negligence on part of the police and a said tacit understanding between cops and gamblers have turned Assam into a hotbed of IPL betting and “Teer” gambling.
Statements by people associated with Teer gambling:
People with knowledge about gambling in the state say IPL betting networks have sprung up in every nook and corner of Assam. While speaking to a media house a person associated with the IPL betting system told, “These rackets operate on a daily basis whenever a cricket match takes place anywhere in the world. Several students have gone into depression after losing large sums of money in IPL betting and have had to sell their personal belongings, like motorcycles. They can’t tell their parents regarding the money and so they have to take loan from some locals who are also involved in the gambling. Such gambling pushes youths into debt traps.”
