On January 21, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Government will release an amount of Rs 25 crore for Assam University.

About the speech:

Delivering the 29th foundation day lecture of the central university, Sarma said that the amount would be released within two years by the State Government. However, the central university, which is an affiliating institution for the colleges run by the State Government, has to submit a detailed project report specifying the segments where the amount will be spent.

Self-reliant Assam:

Sarma, in his hour-long speech, said that to make the State self-reliant, stress should be laid on job creation instead of job searching. He urged upon the university authority to give special importance to the start-up segment so that students are motivated for entrepreneurship.

Sarma said, “Establishing connection is the key to civilization, culture and education. This connection is a connection among human minds. I am really overwhelmed to have been invited to the 29th foundation day of Assam University. Our government will try to keep the bridge of this connection intact. For the development of academic environment of Assam University, I have also committed myself along with the rest of the fraternity of the University.”

The Chief Minister also said that the traditional Indian civilization has taught mankind to seek knowledge and wisdom. The Chief Minister said that Indian education system has always been a motivator for leadership based on values.

He said, “We all have to be diligent in our own endeavors so that we can survive the whole life with human philosophy. Assam’s GDP today stands at Rs 4 lakh crore. However, a huge chunk of the money is spent on bringing commodities from outside the state. “If we can produce all our necessities in Assam, we will have huge wealth in the state.” Speaking on the need of bringing in innovative practices, including start up ventures, the Chief Minister said that institution of higher education should take the lead in motivating young minds for the start up ventures. He also said that State government would give Rs. 25 crore to Assam University to help the institution to go for start up ventures including setting innovation lab along with others to stimulate entrepreneurial skills of the students.

Sarma said that the State’s current GDP is Rs 4 lakh crore, but as the State has to solely depend on procuring all the basic needs from other States, almost Rs 3.7 lakh crore of the GDP gets exhausted. To make Assam prosper more, the expenditure on imports from other States has to be drastically curbed so that the GDP can be circulated within the State, he said.

Earlier, Chief Minister Sarma formally inaugurated the Rs 5.39 crore Cath Lab at Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH). Speaking to the media, Sarma said, search is on to depute a permanent cardiologist at SMCH to run the Cath Lab. He also inaugurated the PG doctors’ hostel building today.
