In the Bulli Bai app photos of Muslim women were uploaded on it without their consent and were put up for auction.
Few days back there was a huge Twitter outrage of #bullibai #bullideals and many such other hashtags. With captions such as “Your Bulli Bai of the day is” photos of Muslim women were posted.
What is the Bulli Bai app controversy about?

The word “bulli” is a derogatory local slang. The Bulli Bai is an app developed by a group of Indians from across the country to trick people and make money.
The whole idea behind this app was to put Indian women mostly Muslim women up for auction using inappropriate photos.
The whole auction however, is a scam. Photos of Muslim women are put up in order to earn money.
What happens in the Bulli Bai app?
Basically, cybercriminals take photos of popular women such as celebrities, influencers, journalists from their social media accounts and use them for their app to earn money.
They put up inappropriate photos of such popular women to lure men for their benefits.
One cannot find this app on Google play store nor Apple store. It is hosted on a code repository and software collaboration platform called GitHub.
The app shows photos of more than 100 Muslim however the auctions are fake. A similar app, Sulli Deals, was also hosted on GitHub last year. Sulli deals also created a huge commotion in the internet. However, the app has been blocked now.
The Bulli Bai controversy first came up on 1st of January as several Muslim women found themselves on ‘auction’ on an app.
The ongoing case of Bulli Bai app
The woman who lodged the first complaint against Bulli Bai works with an online news portal. She said that her picture was used “in an improper, unacceptable and clearly lewd context.”
Regarding the case, police have made three arrests. A 20-year-old B.Tech. student was arrested for allegedly creating the app.
What does such repeatedly happening cases imply? It raises a question upon the safety of women and how unsafe social media platforms can be.
