The chief ministers of Assam and Mizoram will meet in Delhi on Thursday to iron out differences and resolve the matter, more than three months after police fought at the inter-state border, resulting in six deaths.
According to Ministry of Home Affairs sources, Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma would hold the meeting at a place of their choice.
“The meeting has been arranged at the prodding of the Home Minister. The Centre wants the two states resolve the boundary issue through talks. The home minister will not be present in the meeting, nor will it take place at North Block,”according to an MHA official.
Earlier conflicts
Many portions of the 165-kilometer Assam-Mizoram border are disputed, resulting in conflicts between villagers and police forces. It erupted into a major crisis in July when police forces from the two states clashed at the Kolasib-Vairengte border, resulting in the deaths of six Assam policemen and the injury of several more, including the district SP.
The Centre, alarmed, attempted to mediate by sending central forces and urging the two states to talk, but the impasse lasted days. It was in August that the two states officially engaged through top officials in Aizawl.

Settlement between Assam and Mizoram
Representatives from the two states pledged not to have any “fresh deployment” in the disputed areas following the first government-level negotiations between the two states since the July 26 border incident, and a joint statement was made.
“Both the state governments agree to maintain peace in the inter-state border areas and welcomed the deployment of (a) neutral force by the Government of India in this regard,” according to a statement issued on August 5.
