Members of the Dimasa National Liberation Army (DNLA) have allegedly killed five people near Diyungbra in the Dima Hasao district of Assam when they attacked trucks carrying coal on Thursday night.
What actually happened?
The trucks were loaded with coal and other materials that they were carrying for a cement manufacturing plant nearby. Police said that the terrorists opened fire at the truck drivers and later set the trucks on fire. As security personnel got to know about the incident, they went to the spot at Rangerbeel on Umrangsu Lanka Road and recovered the bodies.
Joint combing operation underway
Jayant Singh, Superintendent of Police (Dima Hasao District) said that Assam Police in coordination with the Army’s Assam Rifles unit are carrying out an extensive combing operation in the area. Further, an investigation has been launched.
Retaliatory attack
Police suspect that this might have been a retaliatory attack for the operation carried out in May.
“Information we got from the ground was that five suspected militants, who first fired from automatic weapons, set the trucks ablaze. We suspect the militant organisation DNLA to be behind this attack,” Singh said.
Security forces, after a young man was killed by the DNLA in the area, had killed six DNLA terrorists in the Dhansiri area of Karbi Anglong district in an encounter in May. Arms and ammunition were retrieved from their possession, the police said.
