The All Assam Motor Transport Association (AAMTA) has decided to increase the fares of public buses by 50 percent, if the government does not fulfill their demands of financial assistance to the bus owners and drivers amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
While briefing the media in this regard AAMTA said that from September 1 bus fares will be increased once the government relaxes the inter-district movement.
The decision was taken by AAMTA while a meeting was held in Tezpur on Sunday (August 22).
New bus fares will be applicable after inter District movement will resume
The association asserted that the new bus fares will be applicable after the inter-district movement of public buses resumes in the state.
The association has called for the hike in fares due to the increase in the prices of diesel and petrol.

They demanded for certain relaxation
The association also demanded a waiver of road tax and measures for extending the insurance period of the vehicles by one year.
As the prices of commodity have been increased in the recent times an increase in the bus fare will solve the problems faced by the operators, according to the association.
Effect of COVID-19 on transport sector
Additionally, due to COVID-19 situation the transport sector has also been badly hit.
It should be mentioned that the Assam Government had increased the bus fare by 25% in 2019 after protests by AAMTA.
