On February 8, 3 people were arrested on charges of smuggling tiger skin in Betbari, Assam an encroached area in the Bhuyapara range of the park.

3 arrested in Assam:

The team of forest officials and police was tipped off about the location of the tiger skin on Sunday by a fourth involved, a surrendered NDFB militant called Bulagra Basumatary. Park director HK Sarma said Basumatary, during interrogation, revealed that he and his accomplices had hidden the tiger skin in Betbari.

About the tiger:

The tiger, which had been poisoned, had been translocated to Manas from Sivasagar in 2006. The national park, which is also a tiger reserve, and the Royal Manas National Park in Bhutan form a contiguous landscape.

Park sources said encroachment in Manas was a major threat to conservation.

The authorities said that in the past there were cases where encroachers had been involved in rhino poaching and other wildlife crimes.

The latest monitoring by the Transboundary Manas Conservation Area, a joint initiative of India and Bhutan, found 21 tigers in the landscape.

Previous case:

Earlier, last week Forest personnel led by forest officer Ikbal Hussein and beat officer Madhurya Saikia and assisted by SRPF and AFPF arrested three suspected poachers on Wednesday on the NH-15 at Bihpukhuri under Biswanath Wildlife Division.

The arrested persons were identified as Yudhisthir Tanti (28) of Gingia, Bullet Munda (37) of Borjarani and Subhas Mirdha (24) of Borjarani. The team also recovered skin, bones and teeth of a leopard which was supposed to be killed a few days back, and a motorcycle from their possession.
