After hearing the successful news of Pig’s liver transplant by Doctors at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in the US, Dr. Dhani Ram Baruah’s face lit up with joy. He could not express his happiness in words.
What happened?
Previously Doctors in the US transplanted a genetically modified pig heart into a 57-year-old patient with a terminal illness. However, Doctor Dhani Ram Baruah had achieved this, 25 years back here in Assam and had managed to keep his patient alive for a week.

The 72-year-old doctor’s long-time associate Dr. Geeta said Dr. Baruah has lost the ability to speak normally after brain surgery following a stroke in 2016. “He has not lost his voice but one is unable to understand what he is saying,” she said. “But he told me that he is happy with the news and remembers clearly the surgery he had performed on January 1, 1997, on Purno Saikia.”
