Assam is poised for a significant transformation in its healthcare sector, with the state government setting an ambitious target to establish 24 new medical colleges by 2029-30. This announcement was made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma during the inauguration of the Pragjyotishpur Medical College in Birubari, Guwahati, on Saturday. The move underscores the government’s commitment to bolstering healthcare access and medical education in the state.
Assam to Establish 24 Medical Colleges by 2029-30
The newly inaugurated Pragjyotishpur Medical College marks Assam’s 14th medical college and is the second in Guwahati, built to alleviate the strain on existing healthcare institutions, particularly the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). The Chief Minister emphasized that the expansion of medical colleges across Assam will continue, citing the recent approval for two additional institutions in Bongaigaon and Biswanath.
Expanding Medical Education and Healthcare Services
Speaking at the inauguration event, CM Sarma reaffirmed the state’s commitment to enhancing healthcare infrastructure. “The attempt to construct new medical colleges in Assam will continue. With the inauguration of the 14th medical college today, we have also decided to proceed with the establishment of Bongaigaon and Biswanath medical colleges,” he said.
The Pragjyotishpur Medical College, built at a cost of ₹496 crore, is expected to be a game-changer for medical services in the region. It features 505 beds, modern hostel facilities, and cutting-edge medical technology, ensuring advanced patient care and high-quality education for future medical professionals.
Addressing Healthcare Challenges in Guwahati
The decision to establish a second medical college in Guwahati was driven by the overwhelming burden on GMCH, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic. CM Sarma recalled the critical situation that underscored the necessity for additional medical infrastructure in the city. “There was tremendous pressure at Gauhati Medical College, and at that moment, we decided to establish a second medical college,” he stated.
With the addition of Pragjyotishpur Medical College, the government aims to decentralize medical services and enhance healthcare accessibility in Guwahati. The facility is expected to cater to a growing urban population while also accommodating patients from neighboring districts.
Enhancing Healthcare Accessibility and Technology Integration
Designed with state-of-the-art medical technology, Pragjyotishpur Medical College is envisioned as a hub for healthcare professionals and specialized treatment services. The hospital will cater to diverse patient needs, with a particular focus on making healthcare more accessible to working professionals. CM Sarma emphasized the need for flexible consultation hours to accommodate corporate employees who struggle to schedule medical visits during standard working hours.
“I hope this new hospital embraces new technologies and also facilitates people working in the corporate sector, allowing them to access medical care without the need to take leaves,” he added.
New Initiatives for Cancer Care and Healthcare Digitalization
In addition to inaugurating the medical college, the state government introduced several new initiatives aimed at improving healthcare accessibility and digital transformation in the sector. Among these, a comprehensive cancer screening program was launched, targeting 1 crore individuals across the state. This initiative is part of Assam’s broader efforts to combat cancer, which remains a significant public health challenge in the region.
Furthermore, the government unveiled the Human Resource Management Software (HRMS) portal, designed to streamline operations for healthcare workers. This digital platform aims to enhance workforce efficiency, optimize resource allocation, and improve service delivery within Assam’s healthcare system.
Strengthening Healthcare Affordability Through Ayushman Bharat
CM Sarma reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to making healthcare more affordable, particularly for economically disadvantaged communities. He highlighted the role of the Ayushman Bharat Card, which provides financial coverage for medical treatment and diagnostics. Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries can receive coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family for essential medical services.
However, recognizing that some medical expenses may exceed this limit, CM Sarma stated that the government is exploring additional funding sources through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. This approach is expected to bridge financial gaps and provide critical care for patients requiring high-cost treatments.
CSR Contributions to Strengthen Cancer Detection Program
As part of the state’s concerted efforts to enhance cancer care, Indus Tower, a subsidiary of the Bharti Airtel Group, has pledged ₹2.43 crore toward a cancer detection program in nine districts of Assam. This initiative will further augment the state’s cancer screening and early detection efforts, ensuring that more people receive timely diagnosis and treatment.
Future Roadmap: 24 Medical Colleges by 2029-30
The Assam government’s vision to establish 24 medical colleges by 2029-30 is expected to bring long-term improvements to the state’s healthcare system and medical education sector. The expansion plan aligns with the broader goal of enhancing medical infrastructure, increasing the number of healthcare professionals, and improving access to quality medical education.
The government remains committed to accelerating these developments through public-private partnerships, policy reforms, and strategic investments. With a clear roadmap ahead, Assam is on track to become a leading state in healthcare and medical education in India.
The inauguration of Pragjyotishpur Medical College marks a significant step forward in Assam’s journey toward strengthening its healthcare infrastructure. With new medical colleges in the pipeline and transformative healthcare initiatives underway, the state is set to witness unprecedented growth in medical education, hospital facilities, and healthcare accessibility. The government’s commitment to affordability, digitalization, and CSR collaboration further reinforces Assam’s position as a state dedicated to enhancing healthcare for all.
