On the occasion of National Epilepsy Day, GNRC Hospitals highlighted the urgent need for public awareness, early diagnosis, and timely treatment of epilepsy in Assam and Northeast India. Experts noted that although Assam has over three lakh individuals living with epilepsy, a majority remain undiagnosed or untreated due to lack of awareness, social stigma, and misconceptions.

Senior neurologists from GNRC emphasised that more than 40 symptoms of epilepsy often go unrecognised, causing delays in seeking medical help. They reiterated that with proper medication and adherence, over 70% of epilepsy cases are fully controllable, and advanced therapies including surgery can significantly improve outcomes for drug-resistant cases.

Dr. Nabajyoti Barkataky, Senior Neurologist, described epilepsy as a major public health concern, noting that the real challenge lies in late diagnosis: “While millions live with the condition, the real challenge is that many cases in our region remain unidentified. Early diagnosis can make a huge difference.”

Dr. Rupjyoti Das, Senior Neurologist, stressed symptom awareness: “There are more than 40 different symptoms of epilepsy, many of which mimic behavioural or mental health issues. Families should seek help without delay if they observe unusual spells, blank stares, or sudden confusion.”

Dr. Mausumi Borthakur, Consultant Neurologist, addressed stigma as the biggest barrier: “Nearly three-fourths of epilepsy cases are controllable, yet patients avoid treatment due to fear of discrimination. Public education is essential to reduce this stigma.”

Dr. Amit Ranjan Baruah, Consultant Neurologist, underscored the role of modern care: “With personalised medication plans, lifestyle management and advanced diagnostics, we can significantly improve a patient’s quality of life.”

Dr. Paranjyoti Barman, Senior Neurosurgeon, highlighted surgical options: “Surgery is not a last resort, it is a proven, life-changing solution for many drug-resistant cases when the seizure focus is identifiable.”

Dr. Sumita Kalita, Consultant Neurologist, spoke on myths and inclusion: “Epilepsy does not limit a person’s abilities. People with epilepsy can excel in academics, sports, and professional life. Breaking myths is essential for building an informed society.”
