Some of the common myths are often attached to The cycle of periods or menstruation, It is a subject that has been stereotyped and disregarded for some reasons or the other. The process of menstruation is a natural process that every female human being has to go through in their lifetime. There are many taboos and mis beliefs that are often seen to have been attached to stigimatise it.

In India, the beliefs are so deep rooted that they are followed even today. These myths are generally associated with ones culture and thus holds back the women.

Myths number  1 ; The blood that is shed during the cycle is often considered to be impure.

FACT : this conception of period blood being impure is totally untrue. Rather, the blood that is shed is circulated throughout the woman’s body. This misconception arises due to the failure of many people to understand a woman’s body and the period cycle. The cycle prepares the body for pregnancy in the uterus. As a result women shed party tissue and blood during her cycle. The colour of the blood also changes in terms of a woman’s health, the amount of blood if oxidised and so on.

Myths Number 2 : A woman must not exercise while they are on their periods

FACT : This myth has no scientific backing that can prove that exercise is bad for a woman’s health while they are on their periods. In fact on the other hand, many people suggest that one must do a little bit of exercise and not high intensity ones during the cycle. Exercise helps in proper blood circulation and also to relive cramps. There are many yoga asanas that one can look up to make you feel better during your days.

Myths Number 3 : A woman cannot get pregnant during her cycle

FACT : One has to understand the fact that one might get pregnant even after having sex during periods. The possibilities are low but it cannot be totally ignored. The chance of pregnancy is common if the woman has a short cycle. The average cycle is upto 28 days and if a woman has a shorter cycle then having sex in the end days might lead to pregnancy.

As the symptoms are mostly same during pregnancy and during periods, many woman may get confuse as to if they are really pregnant or is it a false alarm.

Myths number 4 : Hair wash must be avoided during periods

FACT :  A woman’s personal self care and hygiene must not be compromised when a woman undergoes periods. In fact, washing your hair or taking a shower might help you to relive some the cramps that you otherwise experience.

Myth number 5 : Wearing a tampon will make you lose your virginity

FACT : Yes the hymen may stretch when you wear a tampon but this does not mean that you lose your virginity. Hymen may otherwise stretch for other reasons as well – such as doing high intensive exercises, dancing etc.

Myth number 5 : PMS is unreal.

FACT : The symptoms related to PMS are very much real and many woman has to undergo major breakdown issues during her cycle. This may lead to issues such as bloating, fatigue, mood swings, body aches and many more.

Being able to understand one’s problem is a key to a happy relationship and hence the more you know about the facts the better will be your understanding towards menstruration and women’s health in general.
