Assam: Government looks for special Act to prevent mob lynching

The Assam Government is looking forward to introduce an Act in order to prevent mob lynching incidents across the state.

On December 20, Pijush Hazarika, Parliamentary Affairs Minister on behalf of the Chief Minister said that the Assam Government will go through such an Act if in case any other state has the same. 

Mob lynching issue raised by Assam MLA Mrinal Saikia:

On December 20, the concern of mob lynching issue within the state was raised by ruling party MLA Mrinal Saikia under Rule 54. The MLA drew the attention of the House to the mob lynching incidents in Assam, especially the recent incident in Jorhat in which Animesh Bhuyan got lynched and also the lynching case of Abhijeet Nath and Nilotpal Das in Karbi Anglong two years ago.

The MLA stated that to avoid such barbaric incidents in the mere future the Government must implement strict law and further added that ‘Mob lynchings are not a part of the culture of Assam’.

Pijush Hazarika reply:

After listening to the MLAs part Pijush Hazarika said that there are legal proceedings against those involved in mob lynchings according to the existing laws. He mentioned the 2018 judgment in the Tehseen S. Poonawalla v/s Union of India case, where the Supreme Court condemned the ‘sweeping phenomenon’ of lynchings and mob violence in India. The Court issued several directions to the Central and state governments to curb such violence. “We are taking action as per these guidelines,” he said.
