Aparna Dutta Mahanta passes away at 75 who was a famous feminist and Assam’s first woman doctoral graduate in English literature. 

Doctors said she passed away on Wednesday night.

She was 75 and passed away in Guwahati. She is now survived by her husband, who is a famous scientist Dr Paramananda Mahanta, a son and a daughter.

About Aparna Dutta Mahanta 

Aparna Dutta Mahanta was an eminent writer, a retired professor of English and former director of the Women’s Study Centre of Dibrugarh University. 

She was born on August 20, 1946 in Sivasagar. 

She completed her schooling from St Mary’s in Shillong and graduated from St Mary’s College. 

After which she pursued her masters in English Literature from Gauhati University as well as the University of Leeds under a British Council scholarship programme. 

Later, In 1982, she also completed her PhD from Dibrugarh University and became the first woman in Assam to have a doctorate degree in English. 

About her professional life 

She was a professor in the English Department of Dibrugarh University. She was also the founding director of the Women’s Study Centre in the varsity. 

Aparna was one of the developers of modern feminist movement in Assam. She has also authored many books and started Assamese magazine ‘Aideur Jonaki Baat’ on women’s issues.
