The 38th edition of the National Games will be hosted in Uttarakhand from January 28 to February 14, 2025, according to an announcement by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday. The schedule, however, is pending approval from the IOA’s General Assembly, which is set to meet later this month. This marks the first time Uttarakhand will host this prestigious national sporting event.

Uttarakhand to Host 38th National Games in 2025

“We are thrilled to bring the National Games to Uttarakhand, a state that has demonstrated remarkable enthusiasm and dedication to hosting this significant event,” said IOA President PT Usha in an official press release. Usha emphasized that the Games serve as a critical platform for athletes from across the country to showcase their talents and progress towards international success.

The National Games are a key event in India’s sports calendar, fostering competition across various disciplines while serving as a stepping stone for athletes aspiring to represent India on global platforms like the Olympics and Asian Games. Uttarakhand’s selection as the host for the upcoming Games underlines the state’s growing capacity and commitment to supporting and nurturing national-level sports events.

In addition to hosting the National Games, Uttarakhand has also expressed a keen interest in organizing the National Winter Games, a move welcomed by PT Usha, who said she is “eagerly awaiting a firm proposal” from the state regarding this initiative. This reflects the state’s ambition to enhance its sporting portfolio and leverage its natural landscape, particularly its snow-capped mountains, to host winter sports in the future.

The 2025 National Games will feature competitions in 38 different sports, covering a wide range of disciplines from athletics to wrestling, swimming, football, gymnastics, and more. More than 10,000 athletes, officials, and coaches are expected to participate in this massive sporting event, making it one of the largest gatherings of athletes in the country.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his excitement about the opportunity to showcase the state’s sporting spirit and infrastructure on a national platform. “We are committed to delivering a world-class sporting experience,” Dhami said. “The National Games will not only be a celebration of sports but also a showcase of Uttarakhand’s rich culture, traditions, and warm hospitality.”

The state government and local authorities are already gearing up to ensure that the event is a success. Uttarakhand’s unique blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage will undoubtedly add a distinct flavor to the Games, with events likely to be held against the backdrop of the Himalayas, enhancing the appeal of the competitions.

Hosting the National Games is expected to provide a significant boost to Uttarakhand’s sports infrastructure. The state has been steadily improving its facilities, with the State Sports Authority working in tandem with the IOA to prepare the venues and ensure that they meet national and international standards. This includes the construction of new stadiums, the upgrade of existing sports complexes, and ensuring all logistical arrangements are in place for the seamless management of such a large-scale event.

The last edition of the National Games, held in Goa in 2023, witnessed Maharashtra claiming the top spot in the medals tally, with a staggering total of 228 medals, including 80 gold medals. Other states like Haryana, Karnataka, and Services also performed strongly in the Games. The competition in 2025 is expected to be equally fierce, as athletes from various states will vie for glory in what is considered the pinnacle of domestic sports competition in India.

While the focus of the National Games will undoubtedly be on sporting excellence, the event will also serve as an important platform to promote tourism in Uttarakhand. The state, known for its scenic landscapes, pilgrimage sites, and adventure sports opportunities, is likely to see an influx of visitors during the event. The Games will provide a unique opportunity for the state to market itself as a prime tourist destination, especially for sports enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Moreover, hosting the National Games is likely to leave a lasting legacy in the form of improved infrastructure, increased public engagement with sports, and greater encouragement for the youth to pursue sports as a career. For the athletes, the National Games offer a significant stepping stone to national and international recognition, and Uttarakhand will be the venue where many of them will strive to make their mark.

In preparation for the Games, the state is expected to focus heavily on logistics, including transportation, accommodation, and security measures, to ensure that participants and visitors have a smooth and enjoyable experience. The local government has also assured that they will work closely with the central authorities and sports federations to deliver a seamless, safe, and successful edition of the National Games.

With just a few months to go until the event kicks off, the spotlight will now be on Uttarakhand as it gears up to host one of India’s most significant sporting events. As excitement builds, sports enthusiasts across the country are eagerly anticipating the National Games, which promise to be a memorable and transformative event for both athletes and the host state.
