According to Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) the unemployment rate of the country witnessed a sharp decline to 6.57 per cent in January, the lowest since March 2021.
Decrease in unemployment in India:
The reports also revealed that the Northeastern state of Meghalaya stands at the third-lowest position.
In the meantime, Telangana reported the lowest unemployment rate at 0.7% in January, followed by Gujarat (1.2%), Meghalaya and Odisha (1.8%). However, Haryana had the highest unemployment rate at 23.4%, followed by Rajasthan at 18.9%.
India’s unemployment rate witnessed a sharp decline to 6.57% in January, the lowest since March 2021, as the country gradually recovers with easing of restrictions following a decline in Omicron cases, according to CMIE.
In Urban areas:
While unemployment in urban India stood at 8.16% in January, in rural areas it was the lowest at 5.84%.
In rural areas:
Rural India has also seen a decline in the unemployment rate. By the end of January 2022, this rate has come down to 5.84 percent as compared to 10.55 per cent in May 2021.
In December, the unemployment rate in India stood at 7.91%, with urban at 9.30% and rural at 7.28%, it added.
Greater percent of women are unemployed:
According to reports, CMIE had estimated the number of unemployed in India as of December 2021 at 5.3 crore, of which a huge proportion were women. It also said 3.5 crore people were actively looking for work in December 2021, of which 23% or 80 lakh were women.
It is to be noted that the CMIE had estimated the tally of the total number of people that are unemployed in the country as of the month of December last year at 5.3 crores. It mentioned that a huge proportion of the data were women in India that are unemployed.
According to the Managing Director and CEO of CMIE in December 2021 data analysis, a total of 3.5 crores Indians were actively searching for work to get employed in different organizations and among those people 80 lakh individuals that is, 23 percent people were women.
