Shillong: Deputy CM shares gratification for progress of construction of the Shillong-Dawki road

On January 13, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Shillong shared his gratification by saying that he is immensely satisfied with the progress of the construction of the Shillong-Dawki road even as he informed that the construction of the new bridge over Umngot river will commence very soon.

Tynsong’s gratification on the project:

While speaking to the media Tynsong said that the implementation of this crucial road project is going on in full swing. He also added that the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) will soon start the construction of the four-lane road from Umshyrpi to Banuiñ, Mylliem, once the felling of the trees is completed. “The four-lane road will help ease the traffic congestion along this road,” he said.

Further he informed that they have forwarded the matter on the final alignment of the Shillong Western Bypass to New Delhi.

The land acquisition will start once the alignment is approved by the Ministry of Roads, Transport and Highways, Tynsong said, adding, “The Deputy Commissioners of Ri-Bhoi and East Khasi Hills have already started the land acquisition exercise.”

About the project:

The 71-km-long National Highway 40 will be converted into a four-lane from Umshyrpi bridge in Shillong to Baniun at 7th Mile in Upper Shillong and two lanes thereafter till Dawki at an estimated cost of Rs 1,251 crore. The project entails the construction of a bridge over river Umngot at Dawki.

Aim of the project:

The Project aimed at improving the road connectivity within the North-East region of India and with other areas by improving and constructing national highways (including bridges) in the region, thereby contributing to the economic development in the region.

The purpose of the construction was to carry out the road alignment survey works, investigation drilling and relevant laboratory tests at several landslide terrains,to collect subsurface information for preliminary design for roads, landslide preventing works and a bridge along NH40 from Shillong to Dawki in Meghalaya State, India and to collect the information for traffic volume forecast.
