The three-day Innovation NE Week 2025 officially commenced at NIELIT Kohima under the theme “Tech Age & Digital Transformation.” Organized by MeitY and NIELIT in collaboration with Startup Nagaland and the state’s IT department, the summit brings together policymakers, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, and students from across Northeastern states to chart a new era of inclusive digital growth.
Northeast in the Digital Spotlight
For years, the Northeast region has been viewed as marginal in India’s technology narrative. That perception is shifting—Innovation NE Week places the region front and center. With 20 of India’s 55 NIELIT centres located in the Northeast, the summit underscores a renewed push to bridge the digital divide and stimulate region-wide economic opportunity through technology.
Empowering Through Skilling & Innovation
Secretary S. Krishnan of MeitY delivered the virtual keynote, praising Nagaland’s progress and pointing to the region’s advantage: a young, English-proficient workforce ready for the digital economy. From agritech to BPO, he urged scaling opportunities through intentional policy and partnerships.
Dr. Madan Mohan Tripathi, DG of NIELIT, emphasized the institute’s unique role—from skilling to research and accreditation. Offering courses spanning AI, cybersecurity, IoT, AR/VR, blockchain, and electronics system design, NIELIT is driving both foundational education and innovation in the region.

Innovation NE Week 2025: Strategic Collaborations Fuel Regional Innovation
A highlight of the summit was the signing of three key MoUs to strengthen the ecosystem:
- NIELIT Kohima & Vignan TBI, targeting startup incubation and market access for regional entrepreneurs.
- NIELIT Kohima & SPJIMR Mumbai, aimed at institutional mentoring and capability development.
- NIELIT Kohima & ACIC IIT (ISM) Dhanbad Foundation, fostering community-led innovation across diverse states.
These pacts represent a strategic effort to knit local talent with national expertise, creating a scalable ecosystem for grassroots innovation.
Voices of the New Digital Northeast
Dr. G. Hukugha Sema, Secretary of IT&C Nagaland, framed the summit as a call to “innovate, adapt, and change.” He reinforced the potential of the region’s youth and their strong contribution to India’s digital economy, particularly in BPO and IT services—a trend gaining momentum with AI investments becoming a national priority.
From the industry’s perspective, Vaibhav Jain of Google India declared, “The Northeast has arrived on India’s innovation map,” while Amit Mishra from Yotta Data Services emphasized persistence and continuous learning as the foundations of entrepreneurial success.
Innovation NE Week marks a pivotal shift in how the nation views its Northeast—no longer peripheral, but a hub of talent and digital potential. By focusing on advanced skilling, strategic infrastructure, startup mentorship, and institutional collaborations, the summit lays the groundwork for sustainable, tech-led regional growth.
As Innovation NE Week concludes, urgent tasks lie ahead: operationalizing the MoUs, localizing startup support, boosting semiconductor training in Assam, and sustaining youth-focused empowerment initiatives. With NIELIT now recognized as a Deemed-to-be University, there’s an opportunity to elevate the region’s digital leadership through advanced research and degree programs.
The final word belongs to the emerging generation: if supported, skilled, and connected through empowered ecosystems, the Northeast can become a nationwide exemplar of digital transformation and innovation.
