In a significant push to expand India’s premium hospitality footprint into the country’s eastern frontiers, the Indian Hotels Company Ltd (IHCL), the Tata Group’s flagship hospitality arm, is steering its growth strategy towards the Northeast. The company, known for iconic brands like Taj, Vivanta, and Ginger, has announced a slew of projects aimed at bolstering tourism infrastructure and unlocking the region’s untapped potential.
IHCL Sets Sights on Northeast India as Hospitality Growth Hub
Speaking to PTI, IHCL Managing Director and CEO Puneet Chhatwal emphasized that the company’s renewed focus on the Northeast aligns with the national vision of integrating the region more actively into India’s mainstream development agenda.
“Like 50 years ago it was Goa, 30 years ago it was Kerala. More recently, you heard about Lakshadweep. Now it is the North East — which is also in line with India’s ambition of developing the region. As a Tata Group company, this is our contribution,” Chhatwal said.
Strategic Expansion in the Northeast
Currently, IHCL operates 15 hotels across the Northeast with a total inventory of 1,348 rooms. The company has six more hotels in the pipeline, comprising 634 additional rooms, as part of its strategic expansion in the region. Chhatwal confirmed that these developments are part of a long-term vision to establish the Northeast as a prime tourism and business travel destination.
Among the newly announced initiatives is a project in Jagiroad, Assam, located opposite the site of the upcoming Tata Electronics manufacturing facility. This move signals IHCL’s effort to not only support leisure tourism but also provide premium accommodation solutions to serve the growing industrial and business zones in the region.
Upgrades and New Icons in Assam
IHCL’s plans for Assam go beyond just greenfield projects. The company will undertake the conversion and upgrade of the existing Vivanta hotel in Guwahati into a Taj property, thereby elevating its luxury offerings in the state capital. This transformation will also include an expansion of the hotel’s room capacity and the addition of spacious banquet halls, aligning with Guwahati’s increasing demand for premium events and business infrastructure.
In another significant development, IHCL will be setting up a new property in Kaziranga, Assam’s UNESCO-listed national park known for its one-horned rhinoceros. The upcoming hotel is expected to blend ecological sensitivity with high-end luxury, catering to eco-tourists and wildlife enthusiasts. With rising footfall in Kaziranga and the region’s growing popularity among international travelers, this project is likely to become a flagship destination for IHCL.
Northeast’s First ‘Taj Palace’ Property in Tripura
One of the most prestigious announcements by IHCL is the signing of the ‘Taj Pushpabanta Palace’ in Agartala, Tripura — the company’s first Taj Palace property in the entire Northeast. The property was signed in May this year under a public-private partnership with the Government of Tripura.
Originally constructed in 1917 as a holiday residence for the Manikya royal family, the Pushpabanta Palace will be transformed into a premium heritage hotel. The upcoming Taj property will have around 100 rooms, which will be housed in a newly built wing while preserving and showcasing the original architecture and legacy of the palace.
The development, refurbishment, and expansion of the property are expected to be completed within the next three years. Once operational, the Taj Pushpabanta Palace is likely to boost cultural and heritage tourism in Tripura, offering a blend of royal legacy and modern hospitality.
“This is not just a hotel project; it’s a cultural landmark in the making,” Chhatwal said. “We’re proud to bring the Taj Palace experience to Tripura and to contribute to the state’s emerging tourism ecosystem.”
Partnership with Ambuja Neotia Group
Adding to its aggressive growth model in Eastern and Northeastern India, IHCL has also recently partnered with the Ambuja Neotia Group to develop 15 new hotels, most of which will be located across the eastern states, including the Northeast. This strategic alliance will facilitate rapid scale-up, enabling IHCL to tap into emerging markets and offer a variety of properties across its different brands — from luxury to midscale and smart-stay formats.
The partnership is expected to provide a well-rounded boost to tourism and business travel segments in the region, creating employment, enhancing local economies, and promoting sustainable hospitality.
Nation-Building Through Hospitality
IHCL’s pivot towards the East and Northeast is not merely a business decision, but also a commitment towards inclusive development. By investing in infrastructure, job creation, and sustainable tourism, the company aims to play a role in bridging regional disparities in hospitality standards across India.
Tourism stakeholders across the Northeast have welcomed the announcements, stating that increased private sector investment — particularly from established players like IHCL — will enhance the region’s global visibility and encourage other companies to follow suit.
Travel experts say the region’s blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and relatively unexplored terrain make it a compelling destination. However, limited hospitality infrastructure has historically been a challenge. IHCL’s presence, especially with its globally recognized brands, could prove to be a game-changer.
A Hospitality Frontier Ready to Emerge
As Northeast India continues to gain traction on the national and global tourism map, IHCL’s expansive plans could be pivotal in shaping the region’s hospitality landscape over the next decade. From the forests of Kaziranga to the royal corridors of Agartala, IHCL is set to build not just hotels, but experiences that connect culture, comfort, and community.
For the Tata Group’s hospitality arm, the Northeast represents both a new frontier and a familiar mission — building enduring institutions that serve both people and purpose.
