North Guwahati | January 1, 2026:
GNRC Medical in North Guwahati celebrated its 13th Foundation Day on Wednesday. The event reflected on the hospital’s growth over the years and its expanding role in caring for the region’s increasing burden of complex diseases.
A key moment was the laying of the foundation stone for the GNRC Cardiac Sciences Centre and the GNRC Cancer Care Centre at the North Guwahati campus. Shri Deba Kumar Mishra, IAS, District Commissioner of Kamrup, was the Chief Guest.
Hospital officials mentioned that these new centres aim to improve access to quality cardiac and cancer care within Assam and the Northeast. Patients often have to travel outside the region for specialized treatment. Heart disease and cancer are significant health challenges in the area, causing high mortality rates and long-term care needs.
The GNRC Cardiac Sciences Centre will be a 200-bed facility focusing on adult and paediatric cardiac care. Currently, GNRC Medical performs procedures such as angiography and angioplasty, but this expansion will enable more complex surgeries, including Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS). The unit will also feature Northeast India’s first biplane angiography system in the private sector, which offers faster, more precise imaging with lower radiation exposure, especially beneficial for complex cardiac cases.
Studies suggest that roughly 12,500 children in the Northeast need cardiac surgery in their first year of life, but nearly 90 percent go untreated due to a lack of specialized facilities. Therefore, paediatric cardiac surgery will be an important focus of the new centre.
Similarly, the GNRC Cancer Care Centre will also be a 200-bed facility aiming to provide advanced cancer diagnostics and treatment services to the region. It will emphasize integrated care, utilizing precision technologies and newer treatment methods, including artificial intelligence, to enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning. The goal is to reduce the need for patients to seek cancer care outside Assam and the Northeast.

Over the years, GNRC Medical has completed 11,558 angiographies, 4,392 angioplasties, 2,988 pacemaker implantations, and over 150,000 cardiology consultations. This reflects the increasing demand for specialized services at the hospital.
The Foundation Day programme also recognized the contributions of GNRC employees, honouring outstanding performers and winners of in-house competitions. The well-known Assamese singer Diganta Bharati attended the event as Guest of Honour, adding a cultural element to the celebration.
The event was attended by Executive Director Dr Madhurjya Borah, Group CEO Dr Ashish Malakar, CEO Mr. Saransh Sinha, COO Mr. Chidananda Talukdar, Medical Administrator Dr Pritam Choubey, and other senior officials.
Dr. Madhurjya Borah expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from employees and the media. He emphasized that GNRC Medical’s journey has been shaped by a strong commitment to responsible, patient-focused healthcare.
