Pranab Doley, an activist in Assam, a member of the state’s indigenous Mising community has recently made the claim that he has been asked to give ‘proof of his citizenship’. This happened when Doley had applied for the renewal of his passport at the regional passport office. He was served with a notice by the passport office on Monday, December 20.
‘Doubtful Citizen’ Notice
Mr. Doley has contested the last state polls from Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM) against Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) president and state cabinet minister Atul Bora from Bokakhat constituency.
He stated that the reason why he has been labeled as a ‘doubtful citizen’ was possibly the fact that he’s a constant critic of the BJP government.
He said, “I fight to save the constitution and not stay silent. I stood for elections, PM Modi campaigned against me and now I become a doubtful citizen while applying for my passport renewal.”
Surprised by the incident, Bobbeeta Sharma who is the general secretary of Assam Congress said, “How can a person with the title ‘Doley’ be of doubtful citizenship? He is from the Ethnic Mishing community. A Bhumiputra! Nothing can be more outrageous than this!”
She tweeted regarding the same.
