Allahabad: Citing the rising rate of Omicron in the nation, the Allahabad High Court has requested the Election Commission to postpone the upcoming Uttar Pradesh assembly elections by a month or two.
About the request:
The Court urged PM Modi to ban the organizing of election-related gatherings in the state and think about postponing state elections over fears of the highly contagious Covid variant Omicron.
Statement by Allahabad Justice Shekhar Yadav:
Justice Shekhar Yadav stated, “If rallies are not stopped, results will be worse than the second wave.” “Jaan hai toh Jahaan hai (if there is life, we have the world),” he further added.
The Judge said that he decided to put this request in front of the Government citing the gatherings in the court and after witnessing the rise in cases as hundreds of them were listed daily and social distancing was not followed by the large number of people who gathered there.
He said, “There’s a possibility of the third wave of Covid as the cases of the new variant Omicron are rising.” He then mentioned that how the foreign countries has imposed lockdowns in their countries over the fear of the varient.
